What do Scranton, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma have in common?
They both are home to a Cafe Disco.
The one in Oklahoma is named after the fictional one in the TV show the Office.
OKC's Cafe Disco got a mention from two of the show's stars on a podcast. The podcast releases new episodes every Wednesday morning. Cafe Disco's owner said right after the episode that featured them came out Office fans started to reach out, and order cookies
“I just love that people can relate,” said Cafe Disco’s owner Amanda Sakurai.
To non-Office fans, Cafe Disco's name may seem like an odd one for a bakery; but to anyone who knows the ins and outs of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company the name may sound familiar.
“I think people really get excited about macarons, but I think people get especially excited when they hear it’s an Office reference,” explained Sakurai.
Two stars from the Office, Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer host a weekly podcast that breaks down episodes. Last week's dove into Cafe Disco and gave the Oklahoma business a shoutout.
“There is a bakery in Oklahoma names Cafe Disco because they loved this episode so much,” said Angela Kinsey during the Cafe Disco episode of Office Ladies.
Sakurai added, “we had people immediately coming in here locally and they were even like ‘I heard you on the podcast and I wanted to check you out’.” “We we’re getting shipping orders right after the podcast was released,” she continued.
Those orders came from across the country and fans even put show quotes in notes that are sent with the cookie orders. The self-taught baker says the namesake points to how she wants to run a business.
“I like to have fun and we definitely have our little dance parties in the kitchen for sure and just embracing, enjoying what you do and making it fun and creative and exciting,” said
Sakurai.
That includes cookie flavors.
“What would a Dwight flavor macaron be to you?” asked News 9 reporter Brittany Toolis. “Probably beet flavored,” answered Sakurai. She added “I kind of feel like we might have to do that now.
Sakurai said they have ten permanent flavors and each month they have two rotating macaron flavors. January could be when Office fans see some Dwight inspired beet flavor cookies.
