The upcoming Duke's Mayo Bowl packs as much Carolina civic pride as the region can possibly handle. The North Carolina Tar Heels and South Carolina Gamecocks square off at Bank of America Stadium Thursday in Charlotte, with the presenting sponsor being a favorite Carolina condiment in Duke's Mayonnaise. And this year, the winning coach of the Duke's Mayo Bowl will end up doused with the pride of Greenville, South Carolina.
According to a report by Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, North Carolina head coach Mack Brown and South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer have both said they will accept a mayonnaise bath if their team wins the Duke's Mayo Bowl. The brand had stated earlier this month that they would donate $10,000 to the winning team's charity of choice on the condition that their coach agreed to a Duke's dousing.
In their first year as title sponsor of the Queen City Bowl, Duke's made one major omission from the 2020 edition of their game. When the Wisconsin Badgers earned the victory, head coach Paul Chryst was given a traditional Gatorade shower instead of the gooey, yolk-laden bath that some observers had been hoping for. Needless to say, that oversight -- and opportunity to promote the mayo brand -- has been corrected.
In addition to the promised Duke's bath for the winner, this year also marks the 20th Anniversary of the Duke's Mayo Bowl, which was first held in 2002 and has traditionally pitted an ACC team against a team from either the SEC or the Big Ten. The bowl recently announced its All-Bowl teams from the last two decades, a list which includes a number of notable players from the Carolinas such as Hakeem Nicks, Mario Williams, Joe Thuney, Ryan Switzer and more.
