A metro school district is adding another COVID-19 protocol in response to the rise in cases.
Starting next week, students and staff at Millwood Public Schools can expect random COVID-19 screenings.
The district says it's the right thing to do as cases rise.
“I appreciate the random COVID testing. I think it is just another step in adding another layer of protection against COVID for our classrooms,” said
Alyssa Andrews, whose children go to school in the district.
Students who attend Millwood Public Schools can expect new testing guidelines after winter break, in addition to the mask requirement that is already in place.
The superintendent, Cecilia Robinson-Woods, announced via Facebook that Community Health will be on campus every Wednesday selecting students to take COVID-19 tests.
“Some places it is not as welcomed I guess, but there are plenty of parents within the metro who are very thankful that superintendents like her are willing to step up and provide this added protection, for not only just the school but the families,” said Andrews.
Her daughter, Bailor, is a liver transplant recipient.
“She is very immunocompromised, and it has been a struggle for us to allow her to go into a classroom, but because of the protocols and procedures that Millwood has in place, we felt it was safe enough for her to go,” she said.
Her husband is also a teacher at Millwood Middle school. She said she feels more at ease knowing he can also get tested routinely.
“It is important for testing to be done. It keeps people safer, it keeps people more aware and allows people to be transparent within the schools,” she said.
The district will have extra tests on site for staff, students and family members who want one.
