Family, Friends Of Metro Teen Killed In Drunk Driving Crash Read Impact Statements

A disappointed metro family will have to wait longer for justice for their loved one killed in a DUI crash in October 2020. Two months ago, Malcolm Penney pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident that killed 19-year-old UCO student Marissa Murrow.  Penney was supposed to be sentenced to the crimes on Tuesday in Canadian County, but the hearing was continued.  

Family and friends of Murrow filled every bench in a Canadian County courtroom for the hearing. They anticipated hearing the sentence Penney would serve for Murrow’s death. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said Penney was driving the wrong way on the Kilpatrick Turnpike when he crashed into Murrow’s car. Instead, they heard Victim Impact statements from five people who were part of the college student’s life. 

Murrow’s parents Kristy and Jeff Murrow recalled in court the day they were notified of her death and their daughter’s final moments at the hospital. They said words cannot express their daily grief and loss. They voiced how the young lady’s future was taken from her and they wanted the repeat DUI offender to never have the chance to take another life. 

The judge will determine Penney’s sentencing. 

“We are asking him to sentence him to the maximum the law allows for this,” said Kristy Murrow, victim’s mother. “Again, this was his fifth DUI and this one obviously resulted in the death of our daughter. Had he served time for the fourth, she would be here today.” 

The Murrow’s have requested the sentencing hearing be rescheduled for the beginning of February.
