A Tulsa icon and fixture at University of Tulsa basketball games is recovering after police said he was assaulted outside of a gas station on Brookside.

There is a fundraiser set up to help Kenneth Penn, a man supporters say is a friend to everyone.

Kenneth "MadDog" Penn is known all over Tulsa. "Mad Dog" is known for selling flowers all over town and saying, "Buy a lady a rose."

Maybe you've seen him on a Saturday night on Brookside, where he's offered you a rose; or you've heard him barking from the sidelines at a TU game. Either way, he's made an impact on Tulsa.

"He's just an icon here in Tulsa and a lot of people know him. He's pretty special to all of us and we all consider him a friend.," said Morgan Tracy, Pearl Beach Brew Pub.

Tulsa Police said early in the morning, someone attacked MadDog outside of the QuickTrip in Brookside. No arrests have been made, but officers are reviewing video of the attack.

The community is showing love to MadDog during his recovery.

Morgan Tracy at Pearl Beach Brew Pub said the bar is donating one dollar from each "Vanilla Mad Dog" beer on the menu to help pay for his medical bills.

"We want to do what we can to help our friends. And that's what we mostly care about," said Tracy.

A GoFundMe created by his granddaughter has raised more than $20,000 of the $5,000 goal.

Supportive comments on GoFundMe say things like he's "always putting a smile on people's faces" and he's "such a good guy and deserves the best."

The community said they miss him and can't wait to see him and his roses again.

"We just want to do everything we can to help," said Tracy.

The fundraiser at Pearl Beach will be through February.
