A parent's worst nightmare unfolded in northwest Oklahoma City after a fire forced a family to escape from the second story of their apartment.

"That was horrifying," said Ericka Miles. "I would never have thought my friend would have to jump two stories, and then at that, my baby had to fly two stories down."

It happened Sunday night at the Warwick Apartments near NW Expressway and May. Firefighters say flames had ignited on the first floor of this building and smoke was making its way to the second floor.

"What was going through my head was to grab my son and grab my phone," said Miles. "Honestly, that was the only thing going through my head."

Miles, along with others, were on the second floor when they realized they needed to get out quickly.

"I came out and she was like it's a fire, it's a fire," said Khamani Hill. "We went out to hallway and there was so much smoke that we couldn't breathe, and I was like I don't know what we're going to do."

As smoke filled the room, they decided to take a leap of faith.

That's when Miles heard one of her friends' yells to toss her the two-month-old baby.

"She did not want to drop the baby, but she had no choice," said Hill. "I made sure I did catch the baby."

Firefighters quickly got to the scene and used a ladder to help get the others out. They were able to put out the flames before it spread to other parts of the complex.

Investigators say four total units were damaged and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No injures were reported in the incident.
