Traffic at I-40 and Penn wasn’t moving very fast Monday morning, that’s because there was a cow on the loose that wasn’t concerned at all about rush hour traffic.

“They had a couple of cows, a couple of yearlings bust out of a trailer I guess,” said Blake Igert, who called on to catch the wayward cow.

In came Blake Igert, Jimmy Dishman and their horses Strawberry and Old Blue to the rescue.

“They called us, we work for the ONSY (Oklahoma National Stock Yards) over here on the pinback crew and they called us to come and try and catch him for them,” said Igert.

The two were close by, already at work at the stockyards and headed just up the road to catch the cow.

“He took off down the road and hit the on ramp at I-40 and Agnew and was busting through traffic about to hit I-40,” said Igert.

An Oklahoma City Fire Department crew just happened to be in the area.

“Our crews just happened to notice a loose cow in the road, so they kicked their lights on, just trying to block traffic, to make sure nobody hit the cow,” said Scott Douglas with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

Then it was up to Blake and Jimmy to wrangle this cow.

“My cousin over here through a rope on him and I threw a couple of heels on him, and we stretched him out and got down and tied him down that way he couldn’t take off running no more,” said Igert.

This wasn’t the first time the cowboys have been called on to wrangle a cow.

“This is probably the third or fourth time we’ve done it over here. We’ve done it on I-44, and we’ve done it at one of the golf courses over off I-35,” said Igert.

“You know this does occur from time to time and this incident we got wrapped up in and we were glad to help the cowboys,” said Douglas.

The cowboys know this situation could have easily gone the wrong way.

“The most dangerous part is the bystanders it’s a whole lot easier if people stay in their vehicles and not honk their horns,” said Jimmy Dishman.

What type of reward will these cowboys get for their heroic efforts?

“Awe, they might buy us lunch or something,” said Dishman.

All in a day’s work for these modest heroes.

“That’s just the way it is around here, sometimes they get loose, and stuff happens sometimes,” said Igert.

Fortunately, all ended well, the cow was not harmed, and the cowboys don’t consider themselves to be heroes, they were just doing what cowboys do.

Authorities warn against random citizens trying this on their own.
