Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Participates In Active Shooter Training

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) participated in an active shooter training on Tuesday to prepare for the next school year.

Exercises like this have taken new prominence after the Uvalde shooting earlier this year. Tuesday’s training in the metro included drills and scenarios.

Deputies said the goal is to make sure law enforcement feel confident to tackle any crisis.

Jason Ruegge runs the training division for the OCSO and shared some of the tools they used to practice certain scenarios.

“We use simunitions force on force, and a lot of paper targets we can make to use have guns and not have guns. The men aren’t in the same place, we use different venues and bring in outside instructors. We also force the guys to not only make decisions but make the right decisions and we debrief it to make sure they understand what they did wrong,” said Ruegge.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will be holding similar training. It follows an executive order signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt that requires all troopers to complete the training by January 1, 2023.
