Bone dry trees and grass in Blaine County were on fire Friday.
“It's burning up in these canyons deep, burning out over the bowls and spreading out,” said Jim Shelton, Blaine County Emergency Management director.
Starting as single plume Thursday afternoon, more than 8,000 acres have been scorched as of Saturday morning.
Shelton said the fire is continuing to grow.
Four miles west of Hitchcock the ground is scorched.
“We’re unable to get our trucks and units down into the fire so. Basically, the only way is only with dozers and air support is the only way we’ll be able to get this knocked down,” Shelton said.
David Meier ranches near Hitchcock.
“It's been devastating to watch. It's just unreal. I mean, it's full of cedar trees and stuff so it's caused some humungous flames and burning up grass,” Meier said.
Wind is pushing the fire north Friday evening.
Meier is evacuating cows and hoping something brings this fire to a halt.
According to Blaine County incident management, the fire has travelled nine miles.
Power lines were burned, Okeene doesn't have electricity, Southard residents don't have power and cooling stations are being set up.
This is a developing story.
