While many cities in the metro are experiencing challenges with their water supply, Edmond is getting ahead of the problem.
The City of Edmond is growing, which means they’re going to need more water.
“We're going to be up over 100,000 people well before the next census is completed,” Bill Begley, City of Edmond marketing and public relations manager said.
Currently, the city produces around 20 million gallons a day but soon that won't be enough.
“So, the indoor use we've got plenty of water for now and in the future. It's our summertime our outdoor demands that really get us to that 20 million, 22 million capacity concern,” Kris Neifing, water resources director said.
Kris Neifing said the city started looking for more water resources over ten years ago.
The City of Edmond said their water treatment plant currently produces around 12 million gallons of water a day. They said with a new water plant they will be able to produce triple that, addressing many of their water supply concerns now and in the future.
“The intake will allow us to pull 30 million gallons a day and ultimately 65 million gallons a day for peak flows,” Neifing said.
This will unfold in three phases costing over $250 million. Right now, crews are working on phase one.
“Water is a hugely valuable commodity. So, we want to make sure we're using our water most efficiently,” Begley said.
The project is expected to be completed in 2028. Once the new water plant is completed, the city said they will still encourage water conservation. Right now, they're encouraging residents to use water outdoors every other day.
