A Yukon mother speaks out about bullying after an incident on a Yukon school bus. She says her middle school son was injured by another student while on the way home from school. Now, she wants press charges to send a message that the violence must stop.
“I was mad, I was infuriated when I found out,” said Malia Currnutt.
Currnutt says her son Kyler suffered a head injury following the incident on the bus.
“As soon as I look up, I see a backpack flying at my head,” Kyler said, describing what happened on the school bus Wednesday.
“I was just sitting there like this, and I was crying just trying to hold it in,” he said.
Kyler says another student hit him with a backpack that had a metal water bottle inside, causing a large bump on his forehead. He says he hit the kid back when the student took his phone.
“It was just the heat of the moment honestly and like, if I didn't handle it violently, he probably wouldn't have given my phone back,” said Kyler.
Currnutt took her son to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with a concussion. She says he has had issues with this same student since school started.
“I don't agree with hitting, I don't think violence is the answer, but I also understand and am sympathetic to feeling like you had no other option,” she said.
According to Yukon Public Schools, the district is aware and handling the situation.
“Yukon was super proactive,” she said. “They've made me feel like they care about the results of what happened to Kyler.”
However, the bigger issue she wants to address is bullying.
“Our kids have to stop abusing each other,” she said. “Our kids are dying younger and younger; they’re committing suicide over incidents like this. I don't want to anybody to bury their child and I don't want to bury mine, so it has to stop.”
Kyler says he’s feeling much better and says he just wants everybody to get along.
“I hope that this just stops happening and that nobody is being mean to other people for the fun of it anymore,” he said. “You may think that you're cool for calling this kid something or hitting this kid or whatever, it's not cool.”
The family plans to file charges against the student. Meanwhile, according to the school district, Yukon Police are investigating.
