News On 6 was there when Ni'Avien Golden said his tearful goodbyes to friends and family outside the David L. Moss jail and spoke to his mother Anje.
“My son is not a monster, he is not a thug, we’re surrendering him today to let them know he’s not running, he’s not going anywhere," she said.
A judge issued a warrant for Golden Friday. He's charged with murder and three counts of shooting with intent to kill after the shooting at a McLain High School football game.
"He feared for his life and this situation happened. I hate that it happened. But as a mother to all the mothers that’s grieving and the pain that’s out there, my heart goes out to them," Anje said. “None of this should’ve ever happened.”
Homicide detectives say before the shooting happened, Golden was 'having words ' with a group of people. but specifically one we'll identify as V.
A witness said Golden showed them a gun and that Golden mentioned shooting V after 'having words' with him.
The affidavit says moments later, V asked Golden to come outside.
Another witness then described a group of people surrounding Golden before jumping him and shortly after, they heard gunshots.
News On 6 asked Anje what she'd been told, she said she's looking forward to Golden's day in court.
"I have talked about a lot of things with everybody, and I’ve heard a bunch of different things, but the story will come out later," she said.
Anje says she hopes witnesses come forward so the whole story comes out.
"Come forward and tell your story," she said. "I mean there was a lot of people there, so just come forth and tell your story, what you seen and what you heard.”
Police say 17-year-old Terron Yarbrough died from a gunshot to the chest.
They say another 17-year-old suffered critical injuries but has improved.
A 20-year-old woman and nine-year-old girl who were also shot are already out of the hospital.
