A stolen vehicle chase ended Friday morning with a crash and six teenagers taken into custody.
The Tulsa Police Department had been chasing the stolen vehicle until it crashed into a utility pole around 1:30 a.m. near East 4th Street & South Peoria Avenue. There were six young people inside the vehicle, all juveniles, three boys, and three girls.
Tulsa Police say this is becoming a trend with teenagers being caught in stolen cars and they say it's happening nationwide. Around 1 a.m. Friday morning an officer ran the tag on a jeep near 31st and Riverside and discovered it was stolen. Police say officers followed the Jeep for a bit before activating their emergency lights. Police say instead of stopping the driver kept going leading officers on a short chase.
Police say they decided to back off and let the helicopter follow the Jeep to an area near 3rd and Peoria.
During the chase, police say the driver was switching seats with other people, which caused them to lose control and crash into a utility pole. Police say some of the teenagers tried to run off, but officers surrounded them. They say six teens were all between the ages of 14 and 17.
Officers also found a handgun inside the Jeep.
Police say a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old male were arrested on complaints of possession of a stolen vehicle, eluding, unlawful possession of a firearm, and driving without a driver's license. The other four teenagers, ages 14-15, were cited for curfew violations, which can carry a fine of $200 or community service, and released to their parents.
Police say all of the teens are looking at curfew violations and at least two of the teens could be facing charges for driving a stolen vehicle and having a firearm.
This is a developing story.
