The city of Wagoner celebrated its new status as a Purple Heart city on Saturday.
To be declared a Purple Heart City a mayor must deliver an official proclamation, which is then presented to the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart is a decoration awarded to those wounded or killed while serving with the U.S military.
Signs with a purple heart emblem will be installed at every welcome sign in Wagoner to recognize their title. For the past seven years, Albert Jones has served as the Mayor of Wagoner. He says they have been working to become a Purple Heart City for the past couple of years and says this is a small way to thank veterans for their service.
"As the mayor of the city of Wagoner, when people come into the city and see our welcome sign, I want them to know that we as the city of Wagoner, express gratitude and want to honor the Purple Heart citizens and that we stand up for them and all military veterans," said Jones.
In addition to the ceremony, the American Legion invites citizens to attend its Veterans Day celebration on November 11th.
