Those freezing temps could put people’s homes, cars and personal safety at risk.

Metro leaders are offering advice for staying prepared before heading out the door.

As the sun falls below the horizon, so will the temperatures across Oklahoma.

The air is so cold, City of Edmond spokesperson Bill Begley said they’ve been preparing for a while to keep people safe. He said they’re ready for any potential power outages.

“Our emergency management group has been monitoring this long before anything was put out publicly about the weather,” Begley said. “Addressing [power outages] in this kind of weather is critical.”

Begley’s advice is for people to stay inside during weather like this. Of course, this is the real world and some people must go outside.

Those who must head outdoors - should limit their time outside.

It can take as little as 10 minutes for frostbite to set in.

The Oklahoma City County Health Department said to beat frostbite by covering the skin and leaving it alone to warm up.

Clothing matters – so wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Wear a hat to protect those ears. Wear a neck gaiter or scarf - that can protect the lungs from the extreme cold.

“When you’re breathing in air that cold, it can have a physical effect on you, it can cause issues with your respiratory system,” Begley said.

Gloves are good too, but mittens that are snug at the wrist are better.

Pack a blanket in the car before hitting the road. Preparation that can protect people from the winter’s breath.

Begley has one more piece of advice for homeowners -- never use a generator inside. Opt for a fireplace or a space heater instead.
