The victim, who has not been officially identified by police, was backed over by a work van at a construction site on the northwest side of the city.

Police said 25-year-old Luis Alonso Herdandez-Perez and the victim worked together at the site near north Western Avenue and West Memorial. The crash happened on Wednesday at the end of their shift.

An apartment complex under construction across from TopGolf became the scene of a fatal hit-and-run.

Police were called to the area around 5 p.m. to investigate how a crew member was hit by a work van.

“One person was found deceased,” Sgt. Dillon Quirk with the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

At the time, investigators only had witness statements and cameras to piece together the accident.

“They have utilized some surveillance video of the area to help with the investigation,” Quirk said.

Police said Hernandez-Perez took off on foot after backing over his co-worker.

The suspect has since turned himself in to authorities.

Police said the man showed up to a briefing station to speak to investigators. Perez was arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

“This appears to be a terrible accident,” Quirk said.

Meanwhile, the construction site remained silent.

The Vice President of Construction at Franklin Construction Limited Karl K. Wanke released a statement to News 9.

Wanke said “We are saddened by this incident and have temporarily halted construction while the local authorities complete their investigation."

Police have not been able to contact the victim’s family, and said their name will be released once next of kin has been notified.
