The population at Fort Still will grow after an announcement at the pentagon on Tuesday. People are coming from 6,000 miles away to train at Fort Sill for a purpose. The U.S. will begin training Ukrainian troops to help them fight Russia.
“I can confirm that training for Ukrainian forces on the Patriot defense system will begin as soon as next week at Fort Sill Oklahoma,” said Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, at the Pentagon Press Corps on Tuesday.
The Merriam-Webster definition for Ally is “to unite or form a connection or relation between.” That is what will take place at Fort Sill, an hour’s drive southwest of Oklahoma City.
Ukrainian Troops are heading to Oklahoma to learn how to use a specific weapon. About 100 Ukrainian troops will train on the Patriot missile defense system.
The training will last several months Ryder said the goal is to train these troops as quickly as possible so the troops can return to war.
“The longer those troops are off the line, they're not actually engaged in combat,” Ryder said. “Trying to work with the Ukrainians to see what we can do to accelerate the training timeline.”
The mission is simple. Provide help for a country with a connection to the U.S. by definition.
“Provide another capability to Ukrainian people to defend themselves against Russia’s ongoing aerial assault,” Ryder said.
This is not the first-time allies from another country have trained at Fort Sill. One of Fort Sill’s missions is to help allied troops train field artillery and air defense artillery.
