A Tecumseh police officer put a Pizza Hut sign on her patrol car and delivered a pizza after the original delivery driver got into a crash.
Officer Jolene Doucette said the delivery driver ran off US-177 Monday at the Broadway Extension as they were making a turn.
The delivery driver’s car hit some road signs, deploying the car's airbag. The driver suffered whiplash but was okay, Doucette said, who responded to the crash.
"When the wrecker was on its way, I thought to her and I said, 'Hey, make sure that you get your things from Pizza Hut out of the vehicle. I think your employer is probably going to want that,'" Doucette said.
"And she looked at me, and she asked and said, 'Kind of hoping maybe you could deliver the pizza.' So without a second thought, I said, 'You bet I can.'"
Doucette put the magnetic Pizza Hut sign on the top of her patrol car, took the pizza and successfully delivered it to the intended address a couple of blocks away.
"They're going to think, 'Why does that police officer have my pizza?'" Doucette said. "I was thinking, 'What is my chief going to say when he finds out I delivered (it)?'"
Chief J.R. Kidney learned about Doucette's actions on Wednesday.
"I let her know that I was super proud of her, and I appreciate her for going above and beyond and doing that for the public," Kidney said.
"Anything that we can do to communicate with our citizens and make things fun. And we're talking about an accident where a young lady got damage to her vehicle and then, maybe affecting her job, and Jolene was able to take that to the next step and help her out. And if nothing else, at least make her feel better for a few minutes."
"Really, we're there to serve, protect the public. It really was nothing," Doucette added. She returned the Pizza Hut sign after she completed her delivery.
