OCPD said an officer spotted a truck that was stolen out of Missouri Monday afternoon. The stolen vehicle information indicated the suspect was possibly armed, according to authorities.
According to investigators, the officer then attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, initiating a pursuit. Once a police helicopter had arrived, the ground pursuit was called off while the helicopter monitored the stolen truck.
OCPD said when the truck began to travel in the direction of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Downtown Oklahoma City, officers on the ground reengaged the suspect to attempt to end the chase.
Officers then decided to perform a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) to prevent the suspect from plowing through the parade, according to Oklahoma City Police.
Oklahoma City Police said after the maneuver was successfully performed, Nelson turned his firearm on himself.
Although there is no evidence that suggests the suspect was targeting the parade, OCPD said the situation became dire as he continued fleeing police and driving at a high rate of speed toward the parade.
