This Black History Month, a local leader’s efforts are being noticed on a national level. Oklahoma City Community College President Dr. Mautra Jones was named one of 10 Black higher education CEOs to watch in 2023 by Forbes.
“Not only was it surprising, it was incredible,” Dr. Jones recounted.
But she says this doesn’t jut reflect on her alone, but rather is a testament to the hard work of everyone at OCCC. She hopes this benefits the entire college as they strive for excellence and inclusivity.
“It’s not about me. It’s about how hard everyone works here to make sure education is attainable for anyone,” Dr. Jones said, “While I was named, the institution was highlighted for the work that we’re doing. It certainly enhances the brand, but it also enhances a degree from OCCC”
Dr. Jones is joined on Forbes’ list by Black higher education CEOs from universities and colleges across the country, including Harvard and LSU. She was named Oklahoma’s Mother of the Year in 2021 and inducted into the Oklahoma African American Hall of Fame in 2022, making her passion for others is clear.
“As someone who has had to overcome a lot of obstacles, it’s meaningful work for me,” said Dr. Jones, “My entire professional career has been really centered on creating opportunities for students no matter their background, their plight or their position in life.”
Dr. Jones joined OCCC last year as the first woman and first Black president of OCCC.
“What an honor to receive this national recognition during Black History Month,” said Dr. Jones. “I hope this award is inspiring to anyone and everyone who feels like they may not have what it takes.”
She also feels it’s a signal she is leaving a positive impact.
“We’re just getting started and that’s the beautiful thing. The sky is really the limit,” said Dr. Jones.
