No food in the home, no working toilet, and dog feces were everywhere: Oklahoma County investigators said they found two children living in squalor with their parents and eight dogs.
Deputies went to a home on South Youngs Boulevard Wednesday morning for a lockout, said Aaron Brilbeck, public information officer for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office. This meant that the tenants had not been paying rent and were ordered by court to leave the home. Deputies were there to present the paperwork to the tenants before the locks were changed.
Brilbeck said when investigators arrived, they found two parents, their young daughters, and eight dogs living inside the 759-square-foot home that was filled with piles of trash and had feces all over the floors. The girls were 6 and 7 years old.
"They were both sleeping on a filthy couch because their beds were so covered with junk and with feces and with urine that they couldn't sleep on their beds," Brilbeck said, who was at the scene.
Brilbeck said he only saw the two girls briefly before they were taken away, but they appeared to be in good health.
"The mother told our deputy that the little girls were not enrolled in school right now," Brilbeck added.
Brilbeck said the home also had a rodent infestation among the filth.
"The smell in the home was just overwhelming. The smell of urine, of dog feces, a smell of decay," Brilbeck said. "The subflooring [in the laundry room] was just saturated with urine. When you step on it, it's like stepping on a sponge."
The home also had no food in the pantry, cupboards or refrigerator. The fridge was not even plugged in, according to Brilbeck.
"It looks like they were using the stove to heat the home," Brilbeck said. "The door is broken right off the stove, so very, very dangerous."
In addition, the home's only bathroom had a toilet that was not connected, Brilbeck said.
Deputies were still investigating the case to determine whether charges should be pursued, according to Brilbeck. The Sheriff's Office contacted the Department of Human Services and the children were staying with a relative, Brilbeck said. All eight dogs were surrendered.
Brilbeck urged anyone who is struggling to seek rent and food assistance instead of living in such deplorable conditions.
