So far this year, in Oklahoma City alone, 57 guns were reported stolen from vehicles, according to Oklahoma City Police.
"Any time you're dealing with theft from a vehicle, you're dealing with the crime of opportunity," Sgt. Dillon Quirk of the OKC Police said.
Of the 57 guns stolen from vehicles, only 11 of the vehicles were locked, 38 were not.
When it comes to preventing these thefts, Sgt. Dillon has some sage advice.
"Simply take it out of your vehicle when you get home," Sgt. Dillon said.
The thieves aren't picky when it comes to location, either. These thefts happened in packed parking lots and in the driveways of Oklahoma homes.
These thefts are the number 1 way criminals get their hands on guns, creating further danger to the public, OKC Police said.
"That crime could possibly lead to other crimes involving that firearm," Sgt. Dillon said.
If your gun is stolen, police recommend calling and making a report. They also recommend keeping your firearm's serial number on file somewhere, in case of events like this.
In crimes like these, prevention is key.
"We're asking the public to simply remove those firearms from your vehicles," Sgt. Dillon said.
