Oklahoma has some of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country, but a bill being heard by a committee wants to add some exceptions.
“We go all the way back to 1910 criminal statute, to several bills that we passed in 2022,” Senator Daniels, the politician who wrote Bill 834, said.
Bill 834 would allow abortions in special cases; those of rape or incest, but only if reported to police.
“The frustrating part for me,” Daniels said. “Still resides in the fact that we are requiring individuals, victims, of rape and incest to report to law enforcement before they can assess medical treatment.”
Despite ranking 9th in the nation for sexual assault, only 20% of cases are actually reported, according to Senator Carri Hicks.
A second abortion-related bill is also up for consideration this session. SB 931 would give more opportunities for licensed pharmacists to treat patients.
