Valentine's Day Couples Celebrate Over 50 Years Of Marriage

Valentine's day, a day set aside to celebrate love, but what does love look like after a half century of marriage?

“We went through some heartaches, we went through some joyous times,” said Bruce and Susan Young, who have been married for 54 years. 

Over 24 thousand Oklahomans get married every year. 

“We have one wedding picture with him smiling, well I considered it a serious time,” said Bruce and Susan. 

Many couples truly do not understand the commitment of marriage. 

“For better or worse and sickness or health, and he got a bum deal on the sickness cause he has really been good through the years because of my arthritis,” said Melba Case, who has been married to her husband Charles for 67 years. 

“I don’t know that we have ever had an actual big knockdown, drag out disagreement about anything,” said Bruce Young.  

But even in the small disagreements, after 54 years, Bruce knows the drill. 

“Maybe you’re going to lose anyway so why bother,” said Bruce Young. 

“It worked out for us. I think we do have a lot of respect for each other,” said Susan Young.  

Charles and Melba Case have 67 years of marriage. 

“Well, I always say, how could I have been stupid enough to marry someone that was stupid enough to marry me. You have to think about that one,’ said Charles and Melba Case. 

The couple says there is one solution to disagreements. 

“Joke about a lot of things or make lightly about them, he is particularly conservative money wise, we’ve disagreed over that quite a bit,” said Melba Case. 

Both couples agree to survive over 50 years of marriage, compromise is a must. 

“Some things I might not agree with, but I give in a little and my wife gives in a little and we meet on common ground,” said Charles Case. 

Both couples say marriage for them became easier when they became best friends.
