Out in western Oklahoma, the small town of Cheyenne was one of the hardest hit areas by the Feb. 26th severe weather and tornadoes. The town of less than 800 people had multiple damaged buildings, at least 5 homes were a complete loss, there were 3 injuries and 1 fatality.
Our News 9 crews were out in Cheyenne all day as neighbors worked to clean up the mess left behind by the storm and tornados.
One home that was completely destroyed was the house of a family of four who was able to take cover in their cellar. The double-wide was lifted and thrown across the street, littering the area with the debris of all of their belongings.
“Their house is obviously completely gone and all the way down the street and in other towns,” said one neighbor.
The family of 4 who lived at the home was too devastated to speak with us, but family members were on the phone with them as they rode out the storm in their cellar.
The home is one of just many torn apart in Cheyenne by Sunday night's storms.
“It’s gonna take a while to get everything rebuilt and I’m sure we’re gonna be finding stuff for months,” said a neighbor.
But in the midst of destruction, the small town came together for those who lost everything.
“That’s the good thing about living in Roger Mills County. If you’ll excuse me,” said Levi Blackketter, the emergency management director, who got emotional talking about the community outreach. “People take care of each other here. Everybody knows everybody. We’re just one big family.”
“All of this stuff can be replaced by their lives can’t, so we’re just grateful for that, thankful to God,” said the neighbor.
The emergency management division is still working to assess the damage and get complete numbers. We do not have specific information on the injuries and fatality from the storm.
