The Johnson kids weren’t anticipating becoming business owners, but less than a month in, this Nicoma Park hotdog stand is really taking off.
Located on Northeast 23rd Street just west of Westminster, is the newly owned Dawg Pound.
Meet owners, 19-year-old Kaylinn, 16-year-old Karizma, 14-year-old Katrina, and 9-year-old Kingsly.
It all started earlier this month, when their mother, Dalisha Johnson, came home with what she considered exciting news.
“I got home from basketball practice, and my mom said, I bought a hotdog stand,” said Karizma Johnson.
The kids had a hard time believing her initially, but it turns out she did buy the hotdog stand, and after some TLC to the building, on February 14 the Dawg Pound opened for business.
“I think that the people are kind of curious that ‘what is Dawg Pound,’ so when they find out that Dawg Pound is a coney shack, that’s also a plus because we are finding out that people really love hotdogs,” said mother, Dalisha Johnson.
The community is really embracing the young business owners.
“He got it loaded with everything, and then they came back to tell us just how great it was for five minutes straight,” said Karizma Johnson.
With all the buzz, even the town mayor had to check it out.
“We served him like a regular customer, and after we gave him his food, he was like ‘this is great and I’m the mayor,’” said Kaylinn Johnson.
What was anticipated as a summer job for the kids, is now a career investment, serving the community.
“Good food, good hospitality, and just a great time,” said Kaylinn.
The family isn’t sure where all this will go, but at less than thirty days in, business is really doing well, all fueled by a Facebook post.
They are currently open Monday – Saturday 11 AM to 7 PM and Sunday noon to 5 PM. For more information visit their Facebook page @ Dawg Pound Coney Shack.
