A downtown Taco Bell security guard is recovering after being shot twice while on the job. The shooting happened on Sunday in the parking lot of the Taco Bell located near Classen Boulevard and Sheridan Avenue. The gun battle was not the first at the downtown location.

Police noted in court documents they believed it was a random attack. The suspect allegedly ambushed the security guard from behind and took his gun.

The fast food restaurant was back in business less than 24 hours after the parking lot turned into a crime scene. Police were called around 7 p.m. to the restaurant to investigate a shooting involving the fast food store's security guard.

“Apparently was attempting to remove people from the property,” said Sgt. Dillon Quirk, Oklahoma City Police Department. “At some point while that was occurring, an unknown person walked up, punched the security guard and got into a physical altercation with the security guard.”

During the scuffle with 36-year-old Shamond Ellis, police said Ellis was able to grab the guard's duty gun and fire off two shots. The bullets hit the security guard's leg. When officers arrived at the scene, they said the victim was on the sidewalk in pain and yelling.

“They began lifesaving measures,” said Quirk. “They applied a tourniquet to the security guard’s leg. He was taken to a local hospital, turns out he’s going to be OK.”

Witnesses led officers to Ellis, and he was arrested not far from the scene.

This was the second shooting at the same Taco Bell location in less than two years. The last time the tables were turned, the security guard was arrested for shooting a 25-year-old homeless man twice during an altercation. Antjuan Martin was charged with assault and battery and sued by the victim. Martin was also not certified through CLEET to be armed at the time of the shooting.

Ellis was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on one complaint of shooting with intent to kill and assault and battery.
