The director of an animal rescue said she found 17 dogs that were dumped at a single location in Oklahoma City, most of which were puppies.

Mitzi Brogdon, director of the nonprofit, Street Dog Rescue & Recovery, said she was in an area north of Oklahoma City Animal Welfare on Monday because she was trying to help catch two dogs that may have been abandoned. Brogdon said someone had already captured one of the dogs when she arrived. So she helped catch the other dog. Brogdon said both were taken to the Oklahoma Humane Society.

As Brogdon was leaving the scene and driving south on East Grand Boulevard toward Southeast 29th Street, she said she saw a female dog standing in the parking lot of a cell tower. Brogdon said once she pulled over, the dog walked right up to her. As Brogdon was offering the dog food, she saw a large group of puppies appear out of a log.

"I looked past her and there's a fallen log next to the cell tower, and these puppies - they just started spilling out," Brogdon recalled.

Brogdon said there were 17 total dogs: the mother, 14 puppies believed to be 8 weeks old, and two more puppies believed to be several months old. Brogdon fed the dogs and eventually loaded them all into her van.

"I was mad and I was crying and saying I didn't know what I was going to do. But they weren't going to the shelter because they're overwhelmed," said Brogdon. "This is the most I've found in one sitting. But Draper Lake, we find them there. We catch them there all the time. It's such a common issue, you have no idea."

Brogdon said had it not been for the mother dog standing by the road, she would not have seen the puppies. She said all the puppies were very sweet and loved to follow her. The mother dog was also very sweet and well-mannered.

Once Brogdon brought all 17 dogs to her home, she worked with three other rescues - Forever Yours Dog Rescue, 405 Animal Rescue, and SafeHaven Animal Rescue - to find foster families for the animals.

Brogdon said some families had already offered to foster some of the dogs. Anyone else interested in taking the remaining dogs in should call Brogdon at 405-633-1553 or email her at info@streetdogrescueok.org.

"There's never a question when you find dogs like this that they were dumped," said Brogdon. "I'm ashamed that this is the way it is in Oklahoma. We're better than this."

Brogdon said as she was rescuing the 17 dogs, she got a call that someone had dumped another dog from a car on Eastern Avenue in Oklahoma City. But when she arrived, she could not find the dog.
