A Norman family is sharing their story after a man has a heart attack and the fast acts of his wife may have saved his life.

“September 5th. It was Labor Day evening,” said Megan King, reflecting on a difficult day for her family.

King's husband Kyle is a healthy 38-year-old man. Kyle is not the person people often think about when they think about heart problems. While reading to their children, Megan said Kyle's heart stopped.

“I never imagined that I would be using CPR training,” King said.

Doctors and nurses at Norman Regional Health System said Kyle’s cardiac event happens to younger people on a rare occurrence.

“It’s not very common but it does happen,” said Kim Hills, cardiovascular program administrator, at Norman Regional Health System.

King kept her composure during the worst possible moment, but she said it wasn’t easy.

“Oh [it was] terrifying. Terrifying,” King said.

Hill said King’s effort likely helped save Kyle’s life.

“The bystander CPR is so important,” Hill said.

Kyle spent 45 days in the hospital.

“December, first time that I heard him talk,” King said.

Now Kyle is on the road to recovery at a hospital in Houston Texas.

“He got to go fishing last week and walk around the neighborhood and spend some time with our boys,” King said. “Which you just cannot put a price on.”

King was on her way to see Kyle in Houston. She said she is appreciating what lies ahead a little more, thanks to the unexpected curve in her family's road.

Norman Regional Health System is hosting an event called “Be Sweet to Your Heart”. Kyle’s story will be highlighted at the event. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at The Well, 210 S. James Garner Avenue, Norman to celebrate heart health.

The $40 ticket includes instructions on how to make healthy meals. A panel of Norman Regional experts will be on hand to talk about heart health and take people’s questions.
