The first Black wrestling Gold medalist is in Tulsa on Wednesday, teaching kids the sport he loves.
He said he's back to inspire kids and encourage young people to get involved in wrestling.
Kenny Monday is the first Black wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling.
On Wednesday, he visited the Hurricane Training Center in Tulsa to teach his craft and tell these young wrestlers that they can make history too.
“To come back and connect with some of the kids. You know, let them know anything is possible when put your mind to it and you focus and have a dream and you work hard, you can achieve anything in the sport," said Monday.
Around 100 kids were at the clinic doing drills and Kenny told them if he can do it, he knows that they can do it too.
“I started here wrestling at the YMCA when I was six years old," said Monday.
Then he followed his dreams of becoming an Olympic and World champion.
Along the way, wrestling taught him a lot of valuable lessons.
“It teaches you confidence, discipline, all those characteristics. So, there’s a lot that you learn from this sport," said Monday.
When he's not in Tulsa, he's coaching at Morgan State University the only Historically Black College with a Division I wrestling program.
He's now leading the charge to get more Black colleges to have wrestling programs.
"For me, It’s about reinvesting in youth. Because they are our future. Hopefully I can recruit some of these kids that are coming out. That's the goal. Try to bring a pipeline into Oklahoma and bring them to Morgan State at the HBCU program, so I'm excited about the future. I'm excited about the futre of Oklahoma wrestling, ” said Monday.
