A new study from Cricket Wireless shows more Americans are going online to file their taxes than ever before, with over half relying on software or apps.
An Oklahoma technology expert said this means it is also a prime time for hackers to steal information, or even your tax return.
"Remember you are your best firewall for your own information. Don’t provide any information to anyone you don’t trust," Aliza Butz, a client solutions executive at AT&T said. "Don't click on those links. The bank is not going to ask for your personal information. The IRS isn't going to ask you for your social security so make sure you secure your information because it is yours to protect."
Butz said when filing taxes through an app or online, there are a few things to keep in mind to protect yourself
Using a reputable platform like the IRS' free website or a well known site like TurboTax. Also, Butz said to be cautious of what internet you are connected to, as public Wi-Fi isn't secure.
Tax Day for 2023 is April 18.
