Eighteen years old, the age of transition into independence, and eighteen-year-old Denton needs his independence.
In the small town of Binger, Denton has always been a big deal.
“The checker lady was kind of down in the dumps, and you could tell that she just wasn’t having a very good day,” said Denton’s mom, Lacinda Harrison.
So, in his typical, loving way Denton asked the stranger for the hug that would change her life.
“When he gave me a hug, he told me that he loved me, and I was going to end my life, because I didn’t feel like anyone loved me,” said Harrison.
Denton has pretty much always found things to keep him busy around town.
“He’s an honorary police officer for the town of Binger, he likes to pretend to arrest people so that’s his favorite,” said Harrison.
Even with down syndrome, Denton has always wanted his independence.
“He wanted to have a job and he’s been begging to have his own bank card. He keeps saying, I need a credit card, I need a credit card, and we’ve tried to explain, you have to work,” said Harrison.
Denton’s disability, however, prohibits him from typical work.
“He likes to run and that is one of our fears is that he’ll take off, and so we have to be with him,” said Harrison.
His parents bought a tiny house and began restoring it to rent out as an Airbnb.
“This is the one thing that I thought of that he could do,” said Harrison.
“I’m going to wash blankets, wash pillows, and take the trash out,” said Denton.
A paid position with the family business
“I get forty dollars,” said Denton.
Denton is serious about his job.
“In the small town of Binger, he’s pretty special here,” said Denton.
The tiny house is still about a month away from completion, however as soon as it’s ready, Denton is ready to work.
