The family of late Oklahoma County Deputy Jeremy McCain said they are grateful of "so much love towards us" from the community.
McCain, who had served with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office for about 11 years, became the school resource officer for Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond in 2017. On March 10, McCain was seriously injured in a car accident. He died 10 days later.
"He dedicated his life to that school," his younger brother, Dallas McCain, said. "He's always been good with kids and he just fell in love. Honestly, he's just a big kid! I think that's why he communicates with them so well."
Dallas said he's thankful for all the community support since his brother passed away, including the donation of more than $88,000 to the family as of Wednesday.
"We're holding up to the best ability," Dallas said. "It's really the effort of other people in the community, in the Sheriff's Department, in the school just having so much love towards us. It's really, really making this dire time a lot easier."
In another show of support, Gladiator Designs made legacy badges for Dallas and other members of the McCain family.
"I thought I was done crying when I saw it," Dallas said. "This means so much to me just because this is what (my brother) lived for."
Jeremy's 7-year-old son received a legacy badge from Gladiator Designs as well.
"Trying to keep him on a schedule and just keep him occupied because he does know that his daddy's gone," Dallas said.
When Jeremy was in his hospital bed, he clutched his son's pirate figurine. Since then, Dallas has been keeping the toy in his house.
"Just reminds me of my brother and how good of a person he is," Dallas said.
Dallas said he, Jeremy and their brother, Dan, enjoyed golfing together. After Jeremy passed away, they took his ashes on one last golfing trip.
"Jeremy's a comedian. So we got to the golf course and we dropped the ashes off to my brother at the funeral home, and my son, he said, 'Where's Jeremy?' He said, 'Aw man, I left him at home.' So his wife brought Jeremy there and we did the 18 holes," Dallas recalled.
Dallas said if he could say one more thing to Jeremy, he'd tell him "the Giants are not going to win the Super Bowl this year."
"I couldn't put it in one thing. I would have to ask God for five minutes," Dallas added.
To honor Jeremy, Dallas and his wife, Danielle, have started a nonprofit called Deputy 041. Danielle, who is a nurse, will teach people how to perform CPR because bystanders did just that for Jeremy. Proceeds will go to the families of fallen officers and those who have helped the McCain family during this difficult time. For more information, visit the Deputy 041 Facebook page.
