A family whose loved one was killed by a Moore Police officer Saturday said they had questions after police released some bodycam footage and surveillance video from the incident.
“I don’t blame the officer for shooting if he really thought he was in danger. Where is the footage?” said Brian Payne’s relative John Hadley.
Police said Brian Payne was armed with a knife, after an officer ordered him out of a stolen vehicle.
Seconds later police bodycam video showed him running. Police said he was up against a fence when they said he raised a knife and was shot.
Payne: I'm going to kill myself!
Police: Drop it!
Payne: I'm going to kill myself!
Police: He's jumping, he's jumping, he's jumping!
“I’ve watched the video one hundred times, trying to take both sides on this deal,” said Hadley.
Home surveillance video captured Brian Payne as he told police he wanted to die, this after an officer confronted him in a stolen vehicle.
“He knew it was coming to an end, he knew he made mistakes, he knew he was done,” said Hadley.
While his uncle-in-law spent much of his life in prison, and struggled with mental illness, Hadley said Payne wouldn't hurt a soul.
“I have never seen, in my forty years of existence, a man that had this kind of good heart, like pure heart, ever,” said Hadley.
So pure, Hadley says when his wife's uncle got out of prison, he was quickly welcomed into their home, and along for family vacations.
Cherished memories captured on video and in photos.
“He was older than me, he was 55, but he was like my child. We'd talk around a campfire…”said Hadley.
Memories that make Payne's last moments in life all the more difficult to come to terms with.
“Where is the training on this? You got four police officers right there with guns and one guy with a knife. Why are you shooting someone five times, and the fifth time on the ground rolling around. What is that?” said Hadley.
Based on what they've seen so far, Payne's family believes the outcome should have been different.
“Where's the tasers at? Where were the tasers?” said Hadley.
Payne's family told News 9 Payne had recently learned his colon cancer had returned.
Moore police said the shooting remains under investigation.
