This week scientists at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation got a whole lot younger. That's because dozens of students from Putnam City Schools participated in Junior Scientists Day.
Putnam City Schools has raised more than $4 million for cancer research over the years. That is why OMRF invites these kids from the district out to their labs, it's their way to give back.
Michael Taylor, a research technician, told News 9 his group of students was going to figure out if there is more protein in chicken, beef or egg.
These students are observing the world of science
Fifth grade student Kristina Warren said she is discovering opportunities they may not have known about before
"I really do like science. I do think I could be a scientist someday, so I wanted to see what it's like," Warren said.
They are getting hands-on experience.
"We got to put these little tubes and this thing that spins, and it basically moves all the particles around," Warren said.
And Amber Rusnok said they are picking it up fast,
"Kids are getting smarter and smarter and it is absolutely astonishing to learn from them too and she was just talking about her plans for the future, and it feels awesome to be a part of that."
It is something OMRF has been doing for Putnam City schools since 1979.
Putnam City Schools have raised a lot of money in an effort to advance cancer research.
And now their students are learning the sky is the limit.
"My first one is I really wanted to be a singer but I also wanted to be a scientist or a writer or someone that works with a computer so those are my options," Warren said.
