A metro family wants answers after their loved one was murdered last May in northeast Oklahoma City while riding a horse. The police investigation has gone cold, but a $20,000 reward could bring in new leads.

The victim’s mother said on Tuesday they are still at day one, even though 22-year-old Neko McMahan’s murder was 11 months ago. Shelley McMahan pleads for someone to come forward.

She still clings to the pictures and memories of her son.

“He was the comedian of our family,” said Shelley McMahan, the victim's mother. “He made everyone laugh even if you just meet him. The stuff he says he would make you laugh.”

The joy McMahan's son brought to their family came to a tragic end last May. Police said McMahan was riding a horse near the intersection of Northeast 41st Street and Lenox Avenue when he was shot. The young man was driven to the hospital by two people, but he did not survive the injuries.

“I hear he was riding with a friend,” said McMahan. “If that was a true friend or his friend, why didn’t they talk? Why didn’t they speak up? If it was this family, if it was the other way around, they would want us to speak up.”

Investigators still do not have a suspect description or any new information on the case. McMahan's family pulled together $15,000 to offer as a reward for answers. However, the family has since raised the amount to $20,000.

“Like I said, people snitch for free,” said McMahan. “We have 15,000, $15,000 dollars just for information leading to a conviction.”

McMahan said her son was not the kind of person to have enemies. She described McMahan as a hard worker, a loving father to two children and loved caring for his horses.

“Now I’m having to help with his kids,” said McMahan. “Like he has a son that asks about his dad all the time and it’s hard to explain to them.”

Call the police department’s homicide tip line at (405) 297-1200 to speak with detectives if you have information about McMahan’s murder.
