Breast cancer affects one out of every seven women, and that affects not only the ladies and their families, it also affects their friends.
“You’re still the same person on the inside, you just have some physical things on the outside that are different,” said Karen, a two-year breast cancer survivor.
After having four of her close friends all diagnosed with breast cancer, Niki Schrader found herself struggling with how to best support her friends.
“When you are going through something awful in your life and people offer to help you, please let them help you, because when you don’t they feel really helpless,” said Niki Schrader, owner of Tea and Country Estates.
Watching her friends literally fighting for their lives left Schrader feeling helpless.
“When she came to my treatments, at least three of the four of them and each time she brought something meaningful,” said Jennifer, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December.
Schrader and her family own Tea and Country Estates, a historical property in Enid, and she came up with an idea of how to support her friends.
“She starts telling me, I want to plant tulips and have like a tulip fund raising event for breast cancer awareness,” said Jenny, who was diagnosed in September
From there the idea grew into a full festival.
“Jennifer is a runner, so she was like let’s do a 5K, so that’s where the 5K tournament came from. And I don’t run but I can throw a bean bag so let’s do cornhole,” said Schrader.
There will be lots of food, a small petting zoo, and some Enid residents have donated items to be auctioned off.
“There’ll be a barrel train, there will be a grain cart, yes like a grain cart basketball,” said Schrader.
A helicopter candy drop and lots of tulips with proceeds going to Project 31, a local nonprofit support group for breast cancer.
“Women need a connection, they need sisterhood, to be able to identify with other women who are walking the same journey,” said Eva who was diagnosed in 2018.
Everyone is invited to Saturday’s event and the ladies all hope families dealing with breast cancer will come and get support from each other.
“It just gives you a quick getaway just from the worries of the world,” said Schrader.
The event is this Saturday, April 8th, event participants and volunteers are asked to register at www.teaandcountryestate.com/events
