Metro Church Uses Virtual Reality To Help People See Easter Story In New Way

As Easter Sunday approaches, one metro church is using virtual reality technology to help people see the Easter story in a whole new way.

St. Luke's United Methodist Church presents a five-minute virtual reality film called "Resurrection VR,” and it tells the biblical story of Matthew 28 when Jesus rises from the tomb.

The idea came from a St. Luke's member whose kids were using VR for games and entertainment. She thought virtual reality would be a great medium to tell bible stories in a new way.

Resurrection VR is a fully Oklahoma production with local director, Lance McDaniel, and a fully local cast, working with an Oklahoma City based studio, Boiling Point media.

McDaniel said his goal for the film is to give bible stories new life.

"You know, it's a 2,000-year-old book," he said, "And a lot of the time we keep thinking of those people as so different than us, but when you really get into it, they were human just like we are. When you create something in virtual reality it sets you in the location and it makes it really hard to separate yourself, so you realize we are a lot like those people."

This Saturday, a virtual cinema will be set up at St. Luke's Edmond

Churchgoers will have access to 30 headsets to watch the film during their egg hunts at 9 and 11 a.m.

Resurrection VR will be available throughout Easter week at St. Luke’s downtown and Edmond locations.
