Students at Rose State College reunited with their parents after a deadly shooting on campus Monday.
A male suspect shot and killed another male outside the Humanities Department building, said Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter. It happened at around noon.
Porter said the shooting was domestic-related, but the exact relationship between the shooter and the victim was unclear. It was unknown whether the victim was a student or a staff member. As for the suspect, he was arrested and taken to jail, but his identity had not been released as of Monday evening.
Student Daniel Bowman said he was inside the Learning Resource Center when he heard shots.
"Like a whole lot of people running and rushing, honestly," Bowman recalled.
He then hunkered down.
"The staff is very dedicated and really very, very much protective of every student here," said Bowman.
Bowman said he also tried to calm down a classmate.
"Genuinely, she was crying in there, so we were kind of like popping jokes and just trying to cheer up," said Bowman.
Meanwhile, Bowman's mother, Diana Sheely, rushed over to the parking lot near the shooting scene as soon as she heard the news.
"I was about to pass out when I came up because I was like, 'Where is he at?' Sheely recalled.
After Bowman was let out of the building, he and Sheely tearfully embraced.
“Honestly, a whole lot of emotions because I really love my mom and everything and I just think that honestly that if anything bad happened to me, it would hurt her a whole lot," said Bowman. "I honestly don’t want to lose myself and just be without my mom."
Another Rose State student, Grace Pilcher, said she was inside the Humanities Department building when the shots were fired.
"The only thing I really remember from is just watching everyone outside scatter," she said.
Pilcher said she was locked down for about an hour before she reunited with her father in the parking lot.
"It was just crazy. It all happened so fast. I was just crying," said Pilcher.
Despite what he went through, Bowman believed Monday's ordeal strengthened the community because he saw how hard the staff and law enforcement officers worked to protect the students.
