Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has filed a response in support of the stay of execution of Death Row inmate Richard Glossip with the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the filing, Drummond states that the Supreme Court should stay the execution and said that the “absent this Court’s intervention, an execution will move forward under circumstances where the Attorney General has already confessed error- a result that would be unthinkable. In those unprecedented circumstances, the Court should grant the application for a stay of execution."
This comes a week after the state Pardon and Parole denied clemency for Glossip.

Both defense attorneys and Drummond were asking the board for clemency.

“I’m not aware of any time in our history that an attorney general has appeared before this board and argued for clemency,” Drummond said. “I’m also not aware of any time in Oklahoma history that would require it.”
Glossip was sentenced to death for his part in the murder of Barry Van Treese.
Earlier this month, Drummond filed a motion with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to vacate Glossip's conviction.:
“I want to acknowledge how unusual it is for the state to support a clemency application,” Drummond said.
Drummond and Glossip's counsel told the board after a comprehensive review Glossip should not be sentenced to death for this crime. They said there's evidence that's never been presented during either one of the trials regarding the man that killed Van Treese.
Glossip’s execution is scheduled on May 13.
