Two Westmoore High School students are dead, and another is fighting for his life after a car crash over the weekend. The accident happened in southwest Oklahoma City early Sunday morning.

The students killed are 18-year-old Nathan Nguyen and 18-year-old Kaleb Newport. Both were seniors at Westmoore High School just weeks away from graduating.

The sign on the door at GOGO Sushi Express and Grill in Moore read the restaurant is closed until further notice due to unforeseen circumstances. A Facebook post by the restaurant revealed the reason, the family grieving the loss of Nguyen.

“We are in shock and disbelief that he was taken from us. He was a gentle soul that was loved by many. He had a bright future ahead and we are heartbroken that his ended so abruptly,” the family said in a message to News 9.

According to Oklahoma City Police, Newport was driving at a high rate of speed in a 2013 Chevy Camaro.

“For whatever reason the vehicle at a high rate of speed veered off the roadway and went head on into a tree,” said MSgt Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Police say Newport and Nguyen died at the scene. A third student was taken to OU Medical and last listed in serious condition. On Monday, the crash site along Southwest 119th Street and South Rockwell Avenue shows signs of the deadly crash with tree damage, debris and shattered glass scattered across the grass.

“It appears also that alcohol was involved in the crash through alcoholic containers inside the vehicle, speed played a significant role,” said Knight.

Police say none of the students were wearing seat belts. Both Nguyen and Newport were preparing to graduate from Westmoore High School this month. According to Moore Public Schools, the district’s 14 mental health team therapists and counselors spent the day at the high school to support students and employees.
