For kids, a trip to the local park is an exciting time, but a trip to one of the parks in Spencer can actually be a hazard.
“We have four residential parks that we are trying to rebuild,” said Spencer Parks and Recreations Chairman D’Wayne Peters.
The parks were built about 20 years ago and have had no maintenance or upgrades to them since.
“They’re not functionable for kids, and they’re rusted, no seats on some, the wheels don’t work,” said Peters.
Plus, picnic tables that serve absolutely no purpose.
“The table is old, you can’t sit on it, if you do, you had better brace yourself because you might fall through,” said Peters.
Peters took over Spencer parks and recreation a year and a half ago and noticed the problems immediately.
“Sometimes I would drive by the parks and kid’s families are out there playing on rusted equipment, we just need to rebuild them,” said Peters.
He plans to start the rebuilding process with a golf tournament.
“Tee it up for Spencer Parks at John Conrad, May the twelfth,” said Peters.
John Conrad golf course is just south of Reno on Douglas Boulevard in Midwest City. The family event will have lots of food.
“We have barbecue, we have turkey legs, we’re going to have Mexican food,” said Peters.
Plus, play a round of golf with sports stars like Joe Washington, Greg Pruitt and others.
“Joe Carter, he will be there, Tony Peters, he won a super bowl and Joe Carter won a world series,” said Peters.
Even if you’re not a golfer, come out, meet the celebrities and have some great food.
Golf starts at 8 AM, with food trucks arriving about noon. There is still time to register either as a team or to join a team. For information or to sign up visit: https://spencer-parks-and-recreation.perfectgolfevent.com
