The first big travel weekend of the year is approaching and Will Rogers World Airport expects to see higher crowds this week.
Airport staff said about 8,000 people took off Tuesday. That means travelers will want to be prepared for long lines before their flight.
Will Rogers Airport expects its Memorial Day Weekend travel numbers to reach new heights.
“Already kicking off summer vacations for a lot of families,” said Stacey Hamm, Will Rogers Airport public information officer. “We’re starting to get back to the pre-pandemic levels."
Hamm pilots the usual advice toward people planning their first big trip of the year.
“You need to plan ahead,” Hamm said.
Because if people don’t, it goes without saying, their vacation just might launch without them.
“If you’re leaving early in the morning anywhere between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., you wanna be here two-and-a-half hours early,” Hamm said.
Travelers must have their IDs to check-in.
“Your driver’s license ID is up to date,” Hamm said.
Hamm said it’s best for travelers to get dropped off to avoid parking and save time. AAA data shows air travel is up 7% from Memorial Day weekend last year. AAA projects that more than 60,000 Oklahomans will fly this weekend.
“They’re staying longer,” Hamm said.
Air travel also brings more people in for a landing in Oklahoma City.
“It just puts more money back into our economy,” Hamm said. “It’s nice to see people out and about.”
It is the start of summer where the sky is the limit.
