With May being peak season for tornadoes in Oklahoma, many people prepare for storm season by installing storm shelters.
Something that is becoming more common are above-ground storm shelters, according to Boldt Construction senior director Tony Yanda.
"Having a safe place that you can go to whether you're at work or at school is important," Yanda said. "We look at where you want the shelter and the capacity limits and what will fit your aesthetic best."
Yanda said they have worked with school districts such as Norman Schools, Oklahoma City Schools and most recently, Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, the school that took a direct hit from a tornado in 2013, killing 7 children.
Boldt constructed above-ground, classroom-style storm shelters, which Yanda said will keep you safe from debris and flooding.
Above ground shelters are made of concreate or steel, and are also more comfortable than in-ground shelters, according to Yanda. They can handle HVAC systems, and have more for space for storage beds and storm safety supplies.
If you have a storm shelter, first responders recommend registering your shelter with the city so emergency crews know where you are in the event of a storm.
