Tulsa Tough, the renowned annual cycling event that captivates downtown Tulsa, has once again taken center stage. Among the participants in this year's race is Wendy Beeson, a local cyclist with an extraordinary story of triumph. Wendy, a dedicated rider from Cashion, Oklahoma, attributes cycling to saving her life after battling breast cancer.
For an impressive eight years, Wendy Beeson has embraced the grueling challenge of Tulsa Tough, a race known for its tough reputation and ability to attract top cyclists from around the world. She believes that the race truly lives up to its name.
"In the best shape I have ever been in," Wendy Beeson said, reflecting on her cycling journey. "If I hadn't been riding, I don't know what I would have been doing to stay active. It was definitely an advantage."
However, Wendy's passion for cycling took an unexpected turn when she received a breast cancer diagnosis last year. Undeterred by this formidable obstacle, she found solace in training with the Saint Francis Divas Team, who provided unwavering support during her fight against the disease.
"Estrogen and progesterone positive, HER2 negative," Wendy Beeson explained. "Last year, I started treatment with surgery, followed by chemotherapy in August and radiation afterward."
Wendy Beeson's indomitable spirit and dedication paid off as she triumphed over stage one breast cancer. Her victory serves as a testament to the power of teamwork and never giving up. Wendy's journey has inspired many, demonstrating that together, any obstacle can be conquered.
"For the first time in my life, I feel like it's something active that I don't want to quit," Wendy Beeson shared. "It's something I hope to do until I can't walk anymore."
Having defeated cancer, Wendy now embraces each ride with a renewed sense of purpose. She cherishes the moments spent cycling, enjoying the serenity beyond the city limits, surrounded by nature's beauty.
"When you ride out of town and it's quiet, outside the city, you get to see so much," Wendy Beeson joyfully expressed. "Looking around and seeing the beautiful sun and green hills—it's amazing."
Wendy Beeson's incredible story continues to inspire the Tulsa community, reminding everyone of the importance of an active lifestyle and the resilience of the human spirit. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging others to face life's challenges head-on, cherish every moment, and find strength in the support of loved ones.
