The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an animal cruelty case after multiple animals were found inside a trailer home without food or water.

“They said they could hear barking and they could see animals that were jumping up in the windowsills,” said Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie.

Despite their response, not every animal could be saved.

“There were several dead animals found,” said Dinwiddie.

Investigators contacted the homeowner, she claimed she moved into another home where she was being cared for by family. In doing so, investigators said the woman’s pets were left without food or water.

“She had been staying with other family members due to illness, and had someone else that was supposed to be taking care of the animals every couple days, taking them water, but that was not done,” said Dinwiddie.

Inside the trailer, investigators said the temperature soared.

“Very hot, no air, lots and lots of animal feces, lots of fleas,” said Dinwiddie.

After living in filth for weeks, deputies were able to retrieve a cat and a petrified little dog.

“The one dog that survived I’m thinking how could it have survived. The only thing I know of, it was probably eating the dead dogs,” said Jamee Suarez, President for Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.

During the course of the investigation, deputies learned someone had returned to the home in hopes of concealing evidence.

“Tried to bury some of the animals that were inside the trailer,” said Dinwiddie.

Photos were taken of deputies and volunteers with the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals as they uncovered the remains.

“We know they’ve been through some horrific things,” said Suarez.

Dinwiddie said his investigator is planning to present an animal cruelty case to the district attorney.

In the meantime, Suarez hopes to find new homes for the two animals she said were lucky to be alive.

“You wouldn’t forget about an animal. you have a responsibility to those little lives,” said Suarez.
