Local Organization Receives Large Donation Of Water For The Homeless

We’ve heard it over and over again, in these temps, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate -- but how do you do that when you’re homeless?

“I have a homeless ministry right here on the southside of Oklahoma City,” said Karen Monahan with Love Like Jesus Homeless Ministries.

Through her ministry Karen realized the tremendous need for something as simple as water, so she put out the word on social media.

“Sonic got together with me and said they were interested in what I was doing and wanted to be a part of it,” said Monahan.

“Turned in the request to corporate and we got approved to donate over 500 cases of water for the southside ministries,” said Shawn Hill Sonic Corporation District Manager.

Sonic didn’t stop at the donation, they came out to help.

“We’ve got five representatives here from Sonic, managers. They’re helping load and unload,” said Monahan.

Sonic donated so much water, Monahan called 25 other agencies that are just as passionate about helping the homeless.

“We’ve all never been together at one time in one place, so this is kind of special to me,” said Monahan.

“It takes everybody getting together and working together, like you see here, this is teamwork,” said Rudy Garcia with Heart to Heart Homeless Ministry.

Andi Flemming is homeless and came to help because she understands more than anyone the necessity for water.

“There have been several hospitalizations, several deaths, just from the people that I know, just because we don’t have water,” said Flemming.

“When you see the gratitude that people have when you hand them a cold bottle of water and they’re sitting under a tree pouring sweat, the gratitude and the love that they give back to use is a blessing in itself,” said Garcia.
