Help is on its way for wildfire survivors. The fires have died down some, but the battle in Maui is not over.

Exactly how the fire started has not been determined, but meteorologists said Hurricane Dora passing south of the island is partly to blame for strong winds driving the flames.

“Woke up this morning and got on our phones to pictures of our house, just down to the slab. Nothing but smoke, cinders,” said Lahaina resident Jamie Brown.

Hawaiians are waking up without their homes- while those visiting from Durant are trying to get back.

“Thank god the part of the island where we are, everything is halfway calm. Just up the road, 5-10 miles, everything is devastated,” Chancy Miller said.

Miller, his wife, and kids were enjoying a family vacation in Maui when they started to see the devastation.

In Lahaina, people jumped into the ocean to escape the smoke and flames.

The coast guard rescued 14 people. Two children were reunited with their families.

The Miller family was there Monday. They said they saw cars left on the side of the road as people tried to escape.

A family from Stillwater is now home safe. They had a flight out Wednesday and said the airport was packed.

As of Friday, the death toll was up to 67 from the wildfire and with 270 structures destroyed. A mass evacuation effort continues most of the historic front street is left charred and flattened.
