'Her Kids, They Were Everything To Her': Friend Remembers Woman, 3 Children Killed In Murder-Suicide

A childhood friend of a woman killed in a murder-suicide in Oklahoma City said the victim was a dedicated mother who was also dedicated to those around her.

Oklahoma City Police said 28-year-old Ruben Armendariz shot and killed 29-year-old Cassie Flores and their three children - 9-year-old Hillary, 5-year-old Damaris and 2-year-old Matias - before shooting himself. It happened late Wednesday night at a home on Northwest 5th Terrace.

When officers arrived, Flores and two of her children had already died, police said. But Ruben Armendariz and one of the children were still alive. However, they both later died at area hospitals.

Police said Armendariz and Flores were married but separated. But investigators had not said what a possible motive was.

News 9 talked with Morghann Bryant, one of Flores' childhood friends who grew up in the same neighborhood, the very one where she passed away.

"I'm in shock. I can't believe she's gone," said Bryant.

Bryant recalled the type of mother that Flores was.

"Her kids, they were everything to her. She did anything and everything for them," said Bryant. "Recently, they just came back from Houston. They went to the Rainforest Cafe and she said the kids always wanted to go there, so she took them."

Bryant also remembered Flores being a caring friend.

"When I was pregnant with my first son, she was there for me," said Bryant. "I was scared, being a first-time mom. She told me it'd be okay. She was a young mom herself."

Bryant said her older sister and Flores were best friends at Western Heights High School, and that it was Flores who made Bryant's sister come out of her shell.

As for Flores' children, Bryant affectionately said Hillary and Damaris were sassy, with Hillary being passionate about art and Damaris being a daredevil like her mom.

Now, Bryant wants to raise awareness about domestic violence.

"They always fought," Bryant said of Flores' relationship with Armendariz. "They were together for years and he's changed. So if you're in a bad relationship, just leave so you don't get hurt."
