Real Or Cake?: Oklahoma City Woman Creates Deceptive Cakes

A woman in Oklahoma City has earned the name ‘OKC Cake Lady’ for creating cakes that don’t look like cake.

“Tiered cakes, wedding cakes, 3D cakes, shoes, you know whatever you want,” said OKC Cake Lady.

Nicole, or the OKC Cake Lady, discovered her passion while working in a local grocery store. Even though she didn’t have experience as a cake decorator, she was given the chance to work in the bakery.

“Did that for years, about ten years or so, and then eventually broke off on my own,” said Nicole.  

She admits it has been a learning process.

“With, like, chicken there’s no chicken mold you can go by. There’s no food coloring that says chicken skin color, you have actually have to mix these colors up,” said Nicole.

With every cake comes new challenges, something that seems to drive her.

“Went to go eat, came back home, worked on it some more, changed it again, because I think this would make it look more real,” said Nicole.

The truth is Nicole typically zones out for hours perfecting her cakes, and really can’t say how long she spends on any given cake.

“If I were to time myself on everything it would drive me crazy, and then I might say ‘oh no, I’ve been working for eight hours, I need to hurry up.’ I’m doing what I love and however long it takes, it just takes,” said Nicole.  

An obsession she admits kind of controls her.

“I go to the grocery store, and I see a can of soup, and I’m like, that would be cool as a cake,” said Nicole

As the OKC Cake Lady, she posts lots of pictures and videos on social media, and loves the responses, even the ones intended to be negative.

“I need you to cut that because I don’t believe it. That’s like the ultimate comment,” said Nicole.  

She understands the questioning and is even blown away by some of the cakes herself.

“That is wild, even for me it’s wild. I go back and I look at these pictures and I’m like that’s really like a Chik-Fil-A cake,” said Nicole.

After all the product study time and hard work, she is rewarded by her customers’ reactions.

“Anytime I can put a smile on somebody’s face, like that’s everything,” said Nicole.
